The runway 08-26 length was originally planned to meet the aeroplane performance characteristics corresponding to a code C aircraft. In addition, the originally constructed width of the runway's hard surface was 61m and then later, in 1984, reduced to its current width of 45.5m. The width reduction was enacted due to the Airport's projected usage and critical aircraft type, and in order to reduce operational and maintenance costs.

The current critical aircraft is the Falcon 50 corporate jet which has a maximum takeoff weight of 17,600kg (38,800lbs) and market range of 3,500na. miles. The current runway configuration is capable of accommodating Code C commercially available aircraft (which are considered more critical than the Falcton 50). Some Code C aircraft may experience load or range restrictions depending on the operating conditions (i.e., precipitation, temperature) or company operating procedures. Some Code D aircraft may also operatre on a length of 1,829m but will be severely penalized in terms of weight.

Based on the traffic forecasts and market trends influencing the Airport, it is believed that the current runway configuration will be adequate it's needs during the planning period. Should conditions change and warrant an extension to the runway, the Airport property is capable of accommodating a maximum runway length of 2,745m (9,000ft), after taking into account threshold and approach slope surface clearances, without property acquisition and major social and environmental impacts.
